Safari Itinerary

Enjoy a journey to the renowned Serengeti National Park, the epicenter of the Great Migration. Your route takes you through the stunning crater highlands, where a stop at the rim offers a panoramic view of the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater. As you ascend further and crest the hillside, the vast expanse of the Serengeti unfolds before you, stretching endlessly as far as the eye can see. Serengeti, meaning “endless plains” in Kiswahili, covers an impressive 6,900 square miles (18,000 square kilometers) and is teeming with over 2 million large animals, including more than a million wildebeest, hundreds of thousands of plains zebras, and Thomson’s gazelles.
This abundance of prey attracts numerous large predators, such as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas, which roam the park in pursuit of their next meal. The area is also home to a variety of smaller creatures, including rock hyraxes, bat-eared foxes, mongooses, honey badgers, jackals, monkeys, baboons, and African hares, along with nearly 500 species of birds. En route to the Serengeti, you’ll visit the famed Olduvai Gorge, where Dr. Louis and Mary Leakey discovered evidence of early human life. After attending a brief lecture on the archaeological significance and geology of the gorge, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the small museum on-site. Following lunch, embark on an afternoon game drive in the Serengeti, with an overnight stay at Seronera campsite or lodge.

The whole day will be spent on a game drive in the Serengeti National Park. The areas you will visit depend upon the location of the herds. During the short rainy season in November and December the herds move from the hills in the north to the plains in the south while during the longer rainy season from April to June they return back up north. This circle of life is determined by the rainfalls and locations of the herds might vary from year to year but your guide will know where to find the animals and where to see them best. A visit to the Serengeti Visitor Centre is also possible. Here you can learn more about the history of the park and the research that is being done by the Frankfurter Zoological Society.

After breakfast you will continue your safari in the Serengeti National Park. In the Seronera Valley you might be lucky to see predators hunt as animals gather at the waters during the dry season. After lunch at a picnic spot you will slowly drive in the direction of the Ngorongoro Crater. As soon as you have reached the crater you will have a superb view of the caldera. This approximate 20 km wide crater is part of an UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to over 20,000 animals. You will stay at the Ang’ata Ngorongoro Camp on the crater rim from where you will be able to enjoy an incredible sunset..

Rise and shine! After an early breakfast you will drive down the steep path into the crater just. The Ngorongoro Crater is the largest, unbroken and unflooded caldera in the world and it has an unbelievable diversity of wildlife. In addition to zebras and wildebeests, you might also spot the rare black rhino and other members of the “Big Five” – lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard. The crater is also home to other animals such as hyenas, waterbucks, bushbucks, eland and more than 500 bird species. After an extensive game drive and a picnic lunch you will leave the caldera in the early afternoon and drive back to Arusha/Moshi, where you will arrive in the early evening.
