Lake Natron is a salt and soda lake situated in northern Tanzania, near the Kenyan border. The lake lies in the shadow of Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano known as the "Mountain of God" by the Maasai. Lake Natron's highly alkaline waters can reach temperatures of 60°C and a pH similar to ammonia, colored bright red or pink by salt-loving microorganisms. This extreme environment makes it the primary breeding ground in East Africa for over two million lesser flamingos, who nest safely on its desolate mudflats.
